Artist Statement

Jade Kai is a multi-media artist exploring themes of body and embodiment, queer and trans identity, and kinship and culture from the lens of their nonbinary, transgender, and mixed white & African American subjectivity.

Jade majored in Visual Art at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, and has taken courses at the Pratt Institute and The Art Students League. Their graduate education in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies motivates their creative work in making images of human beings, animals, and the earth.

Jade’s representations of human beings highlight autonomous self-expression, self-crafting, and caring for oneself and others. Jade’s soft themes of intimacy juxtaposed with their bold imagery invoke a meaningful contrast that allows viewers to experience the feeling of being in radical authority of one’s own gender, body, self, and culture.
